โ€ฆAnd from the taxpayersโ€™ perspective, if the person received federal funds during their training, and those funds were earmarked to develop academic researchersโ€™ careers, then thatโ€™s a loss, regardless of how the individual and/or their community perceives their switch.

Yes, but whether an individual perceives it as a failure/loss depends a lot on whether it was a voluntary switch or not.

Seeing many tweets of academics sharing their failures and the fact that they โ€˜made itโ€™ anyway: I had 10 fellowships/grants rejected and decided to quit trying.

Thanks for sharing. I've been feeling uncomfy about the survivorship bias on display in this conversation. Personally, I'm on the cusp. I've had lots of successes, but a few recent failures that mean I may or may not "make it".

Wowowowww, what an outstanding, in-depth thread about Aretha Franklinโ€™s musical evolution. *makes second cup of coffee and sits down to get educated*

Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shadeโ€”our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace.

Aretha Franklin was a musical legend by any definition. These performances show why.

Yeah, I do it too. Except with cats. I have a female cat so often accidentally call other cats she/her when I donโ€™t know their sex. It just shows the power of conditioning.

Thanks! This was the right size and shape and there have been a couple of sightings nearby this year, so they definitely live in the immediate area, but the color was just so unexpected.

I figured it was: A) a bobcat, if bobcats can be reddish B) a smallish lost boxer, behaving like a wild animal C) a fox lacking a tail and with serious craniofacial defects I admit that last one is not very likely.

I have a bobcat question, and you are obviously the internetโ€™s go-to bobcat resource soโ€ฆ Can bobcats be reddish? I think I saw one just outside , but the color threw me off.
