Yes. It's not possible or realistic for everyone to move, but if you are serious about breaking in, it'll make the odds of that happening much higher.

that is approximately true, with a little caveat of 'people are hyperbolic'- i'd say most people seem to live within 30-45 mins of work, but that's also likely because people in games trend younger/towards renting and therefore a bit more mobile than homeowners

i 100% totally would but both my + my husbands' entire extended families are here, and being closer to them is the primary reason we moved to this stupidly expensive city

how do you like downtown? good bars/food/things to do? i would generally like to move more east in the future (with downtown definitely being a possibility) as the west side vibe kind of creeps me out

yeah. i have some coworkers that joined the team but didn't move because the kids are in school somewhere/they have a neighborhood nanny program they rely on & leaving would be too much. it sounds completely heartbreaking to have to make those kinds of decisions.

there are exceptions to this, but: you can expect to change jobs roughly every 1-2 years until you hit the 5-7 year mark. then it gets a little more stable-- you're not always the first to go in a layoff. but if a studio closes, it closes, and that happens all the time.

yeah, good point. i've worked at oculus (facebook) and microsoft games, so i know what that life looks like and i'd be ok with it. if i had kids or something, i'd do it. but it'd mean switching off game design to a PM role and i'd kind of grieve a little.

yeah, that's the opposite problem... i have friends/followers in pittsburgh at the one (1) studio there, and i'm not sure how it would go if that studio ever folded

husband i were at dinner & played the game of "where would you work next if you got laid off" (which is a suuuuper normal, healthy thing that people who work in healthy industries do) & i threw out insomniac as a place i hear nice things about. he was like, er, burbank? bad news:
