These substantial polling data showing immigration was the #1 most important issue for most Republicans throughout Trump’s first term. Post-COVID Republicans became even more restrictionist

The WSJ runs a story today noting the Trump campaign “toned down immigration messages that dominated 2016 election” (true). About 13 hours later, the Trump campaign announces this:

This is correct, but "I'd like twitter to…" is no longer sufficient. It's a common carrier & needs to conduct itself as such. Greyhound/Verizon/FedEx/ElectricCo. may not deny you service b/c of your views, so neither should Twitter/Facebook/Google. (And no, they're not "free".)

2020 really needs its own lexicon: "disinformation" = "information I don't like" "conspiracy theory" = "politically damaging claim" "facts" = "unsubstantiated rumors I find appealing" "fact-checking" = "editorializing to protect my friends and hurt my foes"

The more you think about it, this wasn't really an attempt at "gatekeeping." It was an attempt at game-ending, the game being the election.

"Character is on the ballot" is of course why the Hunter emails -- which potentially implicate Joe's character -- should be investigated, not "gatekeepered."

I thought the CW was that Trump's 2018 focus on immigration (the caravans, etc) maybe hurt GOP in the House but saved the Senate. The pro-immigration usual suspects quoted in this piece (Whit Ayres! Frank Sharry!) seem to want to forget that second part.

If I were reporting a story on why Trump wasn't mentioning immigration much, I'd focus on Jared's strategy and Rove's advice, and maybe Trump's missing compass, not talk to a group of loose-borders kibbitzers (Ayres, Sharry, etc.).
