Apropos of nothing, seems like the world could use a few more thoughtful people to build reliable, ethical software for our big challenges!

Accept just enough weaknesses for the thing to exist...but no more. Be just useful enough...without being too useful.
Most importantly though: never, ever be a system designer. It’s a high wire act with questionable support and no net. 😰

This isn't rude... it's absolutely true. When non-autistic people think that we are like them, they ascribe motives onto our actions that we did not intend. People always think my compliments are condescending passive aggression. They're just literal. "good job" = good job twitter.com/iceblueaccent/…

Sometimes system designers are aware of deficiencies, and accepting future facesplosions is the cost of getting the system off the ground.
Then iteration and maintenance demands eat into chances to address deficiencies.
Being overly relied on is as bad as overly reliant. 🤕

This article feels like someone finally telling the truth - truths that I could "feel" all along, as a junior developer experimenting with improving the performance of my code - after a long time of being more-or-less gaslit by nonsense ambient "general wisdom" twitter.com/nelhage/status…

Here's a thing that happens: "We tried your advice by not trying your advice except partly where we did what we want but gave it your labels and it didn't work and therefore you are wrong."

I continue to be perplexed when Seamless says there are no restaurants in my area. I live in Brooklyn. Same reason.

Periodic Reminder: When debugging, you must first accept that something you believe is true is not true. If everything you believed about this system were true, it would work. It doesn't, so you're wrong about something.
This is a surprisingly common stumbling block for devs.

The less someone knows about election security, the more they think that computers are the answer.

So the lesson we’re all learning from this is that if you want technology to solve a problem, you have to give its creators the time and resources required to make sure it can do so, right? right?

A system that does not adequately take collaboration into account when reviewing it's members will not realize the full collaborative potential of those members.
