It's amusing how confident and overly-simplistic people can be about the housing market, which rivals the health care market for its mind-blowing complexity. Many wrong things are delivered with such dismissive authority.

Went to sleep last night thinking of this sentence from the incredible housing crisis series. This is what the problem looks like in the American city with some of the STRONGEST protections for renters.

The homeless crisis is not just a pricey coastal cities issue: In Minneapolis - Saint Paul, hundreds of homeless people are riding the light rail every night with nowhere to go. Shelters are out of space so social service agencies just buy them tickets

This morning I took a heartbreaking walk through LA’s Skid Row, witnessing firsthand the extraordinary homelessness crisis in the city. Over 3000 people sleeping in tents and on grates over a few blocks - in the richest country in the world.

However troubling these numbers are, we know they are too low because we don't have every eviction record in America, not to mention all the "informal" evictions that are not processed through the court, like when landlords pay renters to leave or perform illegal lockouts.
