New Pew report on public attitudes toward algorithms. One of the findings: Attitudes toward algorithmic decision-making depend heavily on context (e.g. majority of social media users positive if algos used to recommend events they might like to attend):

It's targeted advertising and all the behaviors that it incentivizes. I think it's possible to have an internet and even social media without targeted advertising, but it's going to take a lot of hard collective action -- ie the hard work of politics -- to get there

Holy cow. Looks like 38m people voted early. If they make up a third of all voters, as expected, that means 114m (!!!) turnout overall. That's roughly 48.5%. Sounds low, but would be highest since 1966. If it inches above 48.7%, it would be highest since 1914

It makes you wonder whether there's some internal market research memo out there on the product purchasing habits of white supremacist consumers. Apparently they're more likely to be dog owners?

Reporters who haven't read The Oxygen of Amplification yet need to do that right now. There are so many journalists using extremist's own language indiscriminately it's bad and alarming. This research is essential for the industry.

Allow me to share a few thoughts about Lou Dobbs, recently notable for having a guest spread an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory so rancid even Fox News felt compelled to condemn it. Many people remember Dobbs as a guy who used to have a finance show... /1
