just watched the @matrixdotorg video from FOSDEM and it is 🔥🔥🔥
They clearly really truly care about going P2P and making Matrix for everyone... and even got some good demos in! 👏

Matrix is growing on me. Good choice for Mozilla to switch to it.

I think you'll also like "What Lies in the Path of the Revolution" from @amb26ponder and @PTchernavskij which references this idea.
Watch out though, I basically highlighted the entire paper while reading it... It was quite a revelation for me. 🤯

Exciting to see #E2EE for Matrix is enabled by default! (developer version only so far)
They seem to have really thought a lot about how this will avoid issues seen in other protocols.

It's so maddening when we can't copy from a program. If you can't copy and paste it's not really your computer. At the very least some way to export data is required. Owning a computer can be defined by freely composing the programs that can run in it.

there's a learn-to-code argument that, like, learning code gives you agency over your tech
i'm uncomfortable w/ that argument, & i think "our data is stuck in apps" is why: no matter how skilled a programmer you become, you still won't control many apps. it's a structural issue twitter.com/yoshikischmitz…

Frantic final preparations for #FOSDEM demos are under way... if you want to see the grand reveal for cross-signing, QR verification and enabling E2EE by default, head to K-building auditorium at 4pm on Sunday! pic.twitter.com/TnHobirmYs

I was working on some `:visited` styles, and couldn’t figure out why the alpha of my `hsla()` was being ignored. I moved it to `opacity` and it still was ignored… but Firefox reminded me WHY it was being ignored. Thank you, Firefox! I had somehow forgotten about those limits. pic.twitter.com/hcIlVswQ8y

Join us at the PPIG 2020 workshop hosted by @idrc_ocadu in Toronto to explore the margins of programming. Who has agency to participate in computational creativity? What practices, theories, people, and technologies have been overlooked? ppig.org/content/ppig-2…

I just did my very first 'for real' E2EE cross-signing device verification on Matrix with @jryans - and now I magically trust his other devices, and he magically trusts the three of mine that i've verified too! IT IS COMING... pic.twitter.com/apVRXHY1lU

My theory for unblocking progress is inventing something that is both valuable and unmonetizeable. It needs to contain a poison pill for Silicon Valley. E.g. integrated github+npm equivalent but P2P so no servers, so no surveillance and ads.

The moderate popularity Max/MSP / Pure Data enjoy is because they let people make art. So perhaps "make money" is too narrow — too Valley — and the take instead should be "make something valued".

It's 2020 and I'm designing language features to make text parsing easier. How is this not a completely solved problem? How are people OK with regular expressions? Am I insane or is everyone else?
