There's a nice transatlantic example that confused me when I moved to the US: table (UK): propose something for consideration (eg. at a meeting) table (US): postpone consideration of something (eg. at a meeting)

Hiring peeps: You're hiring for a SWE role. You get a resume with a lot of SRE/ops experience, but also had some SWE stuff peppered in. What would sell you on the candidate being a qualified software engineer that did ops-y work, rather than an ops tech that's getting uppity?

It's impossible for new things to start out competitive with the best. They must be protected in obscure and artificial niches while they develop their capabilities and maturity, or they get crushed. This is as true for ideas as it is for companies and species.

By contrast, I'm excited by intellectual fringes on the internet because, while they are severely underdeveloped, naive, and mostly bad, they are new and productive. If we play our cards right and nurture them well, great things can come out of them.

There is a striking resemblance between waves generated in the atmosphere in flow over isolated mountains & wave patterns in the wakes of ships. The shape of this wake was first determined theoretically by Lord Kelvin in his pioneering study of ship waves

Chinese political theorist Jiang Shigong, accused of acting as the Party’s black hand in Hong Kong, has been quietly building a new vision for a new world order that appears tolerant of difference—with Chinese power at its center.

There is zero chance the Chinese state just fixes this & goes back to status quo. If they hang on to power, they will build a third Great Wall of some kind. Great Wall, Great Firewall, Great Biowall? The Great Biowall of China starts with vaccination but could go much further.

The Beal seed burial experiment was started in 1879. They're still digging up viable seeds. Almost time for the 140 year dig.
