I agree with this. Disparities aside, losing your freedom for four years is a devastating sentence. It's just that we routinely sentence people to what amount to life-destroying sentences.

Depends on what you see the purpose is to the U.S. judicial system. 47 months is no deterrent; it tells all the rich, white guys that they can keep on committing crimes - it's no big deal.

I'm not saying that it's enough for every crime certainly. There are many purposes to punishment. I'm making a more general point. We throw people in jail for insanely long periods of time routinely. It's a harsh sentence.
