Narratively the song doesn't line up for me in all the details but there enough there that the first time I heard it it hit me like a truck and it still basically does every time.

Of all the feelings tied to A Better Son/Daughter, probably the two hardest hitting for me are (a) the recognition of the fragility/transience of that "and sometimes when you're on, you're really fucking on" moment when it does come, and being outside that moment wishing for it.

at some point we'll port our gopher server to a VR client and really connect the dots

Another experimental sketch on this embeddings idea, getting back to more literal renderings of containment but with a different aesthetic angle. I like the starkness of the black and white but the color version feels like it carries a little more structure visually.

I would have been more overt and florid with the flippies but we were in a busy children’s museum and discretion seemed appropriate.

Of course if I want to keep the unit area principle in play there the calculations for the shapes get a lot more obnoxious. There was a nice simplicity of just fractions and square roots for the original version, this is getting into doing some real nonsense.

Morning revisit: a hacky nudge of that original rendering to get closer to the idea of a clear communication of separation vs. containment in the embeddings. A version that includes these gaps but keeps the relations of curves correct and does better spacing might be a thing?

Yes, that Euclus work was so nice! I’m thinking more about watercolor renderings if I move forward with this, in a style I’ve been playing with recently for other stuff, but I do really enjoy this flat vector look.

Also, these renderings are in theory correct in terms of equivalent area in every colored shape, but I was working fast and loose with napkin math while sorting it out so I'm less confident of the execution than I'd like to be. Would be worth documenting a bit probably.

I liked this idea enough to work it out a bit, and think it might be interesting to try and render a couple steps farther, but in practice I find that it doesn't read very clearly -- the idea of what's inside what vs. separate doesn't really come off the page very well.
