No, there are not 40M developers on GitHub. Does anyone have a good number for the actual population of developers?

I believe there are 40m accounts. The question with any kind of service, GitHub included, is *active* users. The registrations is a great marketing number, but active users is more useful. All moot though because frankly, who cares how many devs there are on any platform?

Well, Ethan does, for one. :-) He’s investing tens of millions in part because of that 40M number ()

Sure, I just mean how useful is a total userbase figure for the average user or developer? Great marketing, sure, and it shows a platform's success (and is great for their VCs), but I am not sure why the average user/developer needs to care.
