Just found a link to a 404 in the original Stanford Uni paper on Google. I bloody DARE someone to email Sergey or Larry saying "Hi, I noticed you're linking to a 404 page… I have a similar resource you might want to link to instead: [link]?"

In media , It’s rarely the case that a new “thing” doesn’t work. It’s typically the case that we use it wrong, measure the wrong things and are too stupid to rethink what we could make, and let assumptions and herd thinking limit us.

I’m not going to lie. It’s rather frustrating to be inside an industry that talks about the pace of change, taking risks and prides itself on vision and creativity. While basically not changing at all. Year on year on year.

Publishers need Google more than Google needs publishers. That ought to worry all of us.

Now the real question is... do the rankings change because Google changes its interpretation of the query’s intent, or because people click on different results and Google reacts to that?

Yep! Run the example markup here through the SDTT to see how it merges neatly on ID:

I'm experimenting now, and it looks like the SDTT behaviour has changed, and is no longer making a mess of this. So, we should be able to stitch the WebPage to the Breadcrumb more neatly, now! Great spot! I'll get that added to our queue...

We have to use a fragment here in order to avoid precisely that issue. Google require breadcrumb markup to have the ID be/match the URL, which causes endless headaches, but, coalescing that with the WebPage breaks stuff. Did a ton of experimentation with that, and, it's nasty.
