I asked about this and it turned out that they had fertilized their lawn using compost from the kitchen, and this compost had included a substantial amount of tomatillo debris, and the compost had not gotten hot enough to kill the seeds

the *entire* backyard was growing in tiny little tomatillo plants. these friends are very much on twitter but I am not going to tag them.
