"Joe Romance... can't sing, can't act, can talk about political parties a little"
I have been called "slightly reassuring".

I think it is more the persistent notion of regionalism -- real or not. I mean for Bill Clinton in '92 the entire south was really "home turf".

Yep. It isn't the same as the what happened in the Republican Party in 2016, but it rhymes with that.

That is because traditional republican orthodoxy died a long time ago. What is left is the grasping for power and the defense of status and racial hierarchy.

My objection to the "establishment" is that it suggest a level of cohesion and intentionality that simply doesn't exist. Yes, there are powerful people and yes there are networks of connections. But there is no cabal that runs things as the word suggest.

I wondered if that was the case -- your focus outside the US. I am not going to make a full blown American exceptionalism argument -- but I do think Americans are not going to favor the full redistributionist agenda found elsewhere.

We would need to clarify what you mean by redistributive policies. I think what is really popular is a somewhat expanded welfare state. Take healthcare -- what is really popular is not M4A, no matter Bernie says, is the public option.

I am not sure Trump was particularly left -- he promised to defend the status quo as opposed to the normal conservative move of weakening the welfare state.

Yes. That was how he won (in part). That still means that moderates (perceived or real) are more likely to win.

It maybe terrible rhetoric but do you ever criticize Sander's horribly misleading rhetoric, his demonizing of something that doesn't even exist in any meaningful sense -- the supposed Democratic establishment? Buttigieg at worse is puffery. Sanders is demagogic.

I am sure he is far better on democracy and the rule of law than Trump. But Sanders would be a bad president. He has a messiah complex and encourages horrible behavior among his followers. He wants to lead a social movement not be the head of the executive branch.

People like Sanders and his cult who talk about the Democratic establishment and imbue it with great powers are not all that different from Trump supporters talking about the 'deep state'.

What in the world are you talking about? There is no consolidation and the whole thing about talking about the Democratic establishment is really quite irritating. There is not really any such thing.

That is absurd statement. You can't "trust" a person with no sense of cadence. Rhetoric may be important but your statement is stupid.

Yes rhetoric is important. But Lincoln, Churchill, Obama -- you are comparing him to some big names. Where is your analysis of Sanders clunky artless rhetoric.
