I found out today that ABS-CBN were closing not from Twitterverse but from bumping into a friend of mine who i knew from my undergraduate days when i was in Engineering school in the Philippines who i coincidentally bumped into when i went out to buy some groceries

We exchanged pleasantries at first, asked how i was and he said he was a nurse who was stranded when Italy imposed an aggressive lockdown, which kinda made sense given that one of my sister-in-laws is also stranded with us

He was giddy and all and while we were recollecting good times i asked him why he was so giddy and he replied that "that Yellow scumbag network" [sic] ABS-CBN is being ordered shut down. And then, deep inside i had known that Filipinos in general, have lost it.

To be honest with you, i wasn't really much of a fan of ABS-CBN as a Television network. My Tagalog skills were (and still are) horrible enough that i couldn't keep track to what folks there would say, but i had a lot of respect for the network through its online news sites

..as they had news in English, which i appreciated. Plus, they weren't necessarily left or right and i felt that the allegations brought against them were either too petty or were complete bollocks. During the Presidential campaign 4 years ago, i felt they were more Grace Poe

..than Mar Roxas although if you have a stepmother who is an actress in their shows i reckon it would have been reasonable. Plus, the way they covered Mamasapano, Yolanda, Aquino cabinet members getting into trouble, Team Buhay Team Patay tarps, criticism of the RH Bill, etc

Going back to my friend from university, i had brought up the question that "do you really believe everything that the government tells you about this network even if people have countered with facts that contradict them", he kept saying that "Papa Duts i trust him more" [sic]

And he also said that ABS-CBN were "anti-Filipino" because of the way "they hurt Papa Duts" [sic] even if ABS-CBN are politically independent with regards to their news coverage. Also said something about "unplayed campaign ads" to that i countered that that argument was petty

I knew from then that the guy has lost it. I also knew that the Filipino people as a whole have lost it. The guy had said that it's about the law and then that's when i lost my temper and asked if he or any of the OFW community who apparently overwhelmingly support the govt...

..if they felt any sense of remorse over the deaths of those from those pointless drug wars, the intrusion of territory by the Chinese, the abuses of human rights, the turning of the country into a police state and the erosion of freedoms in the country. The fucker said no

I knew, from that point, that the Filipino as a people have lost their sense of principle. I am not a conservative but i modelled those questions along conservative lines because i knew that Filipinos are usually deeply conservative and focus on the lines of respect.

So, i decided to fake "an emergency" and bade farewell but in all truth, i tried my best to run as fast as i could going to the direction of the grocery store where i usually buy my things, then asked my wife to pick me up from the grocery store.

When i got home and logged in on Twitter (i had left my phone at that point) i was shocked that he was right but i was also shocked that there were people saying that "it's harsh but it's the law" that ABS-CBN had to go and then i started to have tears in my eyes as i was upset

To the best of my knowledge, this wasn't the Filipino i knew to be all about. Given that the government has something like 80+% approval rating, i had literally felt we had decided to swap competence or at least a semblance (Mar) of compassion (Poe) or firmness of mind (MDS)

....for something that felt like "obey the law or i kill you" or "shut the fuck up or bad things will happen to you" in which i felt Filipinos in general have normalized. It's a huge shame.

The kind of Filipino i knew, and i hope the Filipino folks who follow me here also share the same opinion and also hold that in practice, involved similar akin to the American classical liberal, about extolling restraint, humility, personal responsibility and respect of others

But at the same time it exposed me to the ugly side of Filipinos and that they are more emboldened to the cult of personality even as the democratic norms, values, respect for the rule of law and individual liberty and freedoms are being eroded.

Apparently y'all have eroded the meaning of "bayanihan" from "solidarity" to "back me at all costs". Make no mistake. "bayanihan" is still a beautiful virtue, but i can't in any way show solidarity to "mainstream Filipinos" if it suppresses the conscience

Folks like ABS-CBN, Rappler, the journos out there who report misconduct to their viewers and readers, the lawyers who fight for human rights (except for those who became part of the sycophantic inner circle) and folks expressing their opposition to every govt wrongdoing...

...are examples of the individual conscience of the Philippines being suppressed and persecuted. I feel that thinking differently than the "mainstream Filipino" is like being considered a "fake Filipino". It's like everyone prefers to be in the "safe side" instead of being right
