Code sketching isn’t an innate talent that only a few will ever be effective at. It’s a simple skill that takes practice to master.

Day 1 of the Sydney workshop finished. We worked on crafting compelling experience visions, selling UX to execs, increasing user research maturity, and designing research agendas based on the Kano model.

So, your implication then is, if someone has developed more than one skill, they’ll automatically produce poorer results than a person who only has one skill. That’s quite a generalization that feels insulting to people who’ve worked hard to develop their skills.

If by specialist, you mean someone with more experience, who mentors them to develop their skills and knowledge, then that has nothing to do with them being a generalist or a specialist.

If that is happening, it sounds to be a symptom, not the problem. I’d look to unprepared design management as the root cause.

Sigh. A good part of my nonprofit experience here in this op-ed. At times, my experience fundraising with foundations and whatnot has been so degrading that I have largely sworn it off.

There may be isolated incidents, but as you say, that’s just bad management.

They are, in fact, bringing design to someplace that never had it before. They are improving overall quality. They aren’t anymore overburdened than any other designer. I don’t see what you’re describing happening at all across the industry.

That’s not at all how we are seeing it. Organizations seeking generalist are not replacing teams of specialists. They are hiring their first designers, trying to cover all the bases. And it’s insulting to suggest the people they’re hiring are hurting design quality.

There’s a difference between oversimplying a profession and just not having a clue what you need to hire for.

The biggest impediment to delivering well-designed products and services is a lack of understanding about our users. The team members and influencers can’t make smart design decisions with information they don’t have.
