I feel like returning null or undefined causes null checks to propagate and duplicate. With Either and Maybe (from Haskell) functions which may not necessarily succeed can be properly handled, and most inportantly, be composable and easy to test.

I think the rationale behind that is that it doesn't make sense to compare two things that are not inherently comparable (i.e. NaN); the false is signaling that the comparison is invalid operation. Different expressions can produce NaN too. See .
