A massive fire on Friday night destroyed 15000 homes in the Chalantika slum in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, leaving 50,000 people homeless. Recent fires in historic Old Dhaka killed 80, and 9 died in a blaze in a slum in the port city of Chittagong.

If Trump reaches a deal with the Taliban, and Peter Feaver argue, "the administration may soon find itself in a new battle over public opinion. The question then would be: Did the United States win or lose?"

I know there's a Polish Duolingo; a friend of a friend that I follow, , could speak to how good it is. A book written by my old professor, Iwona Sadowska, titled "Polish: A Comprehensive Grammar" is pretty good at walking through the structure of the language.

Primarily Slavic but more than in East Slavic languages, due to Latin's historical role, and a decent amount of German. It's not as simple as "composición" in Spanish meaning "composition," though it is "kompozycja." Plus the Latin alphabet is helpful, but orthography can be odd.

I took three years in college, the hardest part for me was the grammar. It's pretty inflective and has 7 cases; if you have a background in Greek or Latin it won't seem too complicated, but it's more complex than a modern romance language, at least for an English speaker.

Islamabad is clearly a problematic partner but we are not "tilting" towards Pakistan; recovering from a nadir =/= favoritism. A balanced policy that prioritizes US interests is better than deferring to Delhi and committing to forever war in Afghanistan.

See, the problem with Manifest Destiny is that we were too close-minded and thought it only meant going south and west. The north and east are still ripe for the taking!

I read a take somewhere that was about how American Orthodoxy is actually less compromised by Americanism than the Catholic church because the denominations are so small and thus cling more fiercely to big-T and little-t tradition. Not sure if there was any science behind it.

I wonder if its more prominent in jurisdictions with higher %age of converts from evangelicalism (Antiochians, OCA, etc) than not. That being said, ROCOR, say, has a lot of...interesting political undercurrents stemming from their own unique history.

We currently give greater leeway to India, with which we have no formal alliance, than we do many of our allies. It's unsustainable to give them such deference on, say, BD policy, if they turn around and hit us on Diego Garcia. I'm all for strong ties, but tempered by realism.

I agree with the key point that the US-India relationship is vital, but opening with an ode to "" worries me. Ceding US interests in S. Asia to Delhi is unsustainable; many of today's problems with China stem from "altruism" in 70s/80s.
