So disappointed in my state senator Jerry Hill for saying "no" to the housing that his constituents desperately need. At least I get to vote for Shelly Masur to take his seat!

Imagine the opposite: housing so abundant and parking so scarce that people park cars in their spare bedrooms. Absurd, right?

Simple proof that our land use priorities have been out of whack: thousands of our neighbors are living in vehicles in free parking spaces. That means we have too much land set aside for free parking and not enough land set aside for affordable housing.

If you think hours-long evening meetings that require you to attend in-person at a specific time, child care and your job be damned, just so you can then be bullied by your neighbors are undemocratic, JUST WAIT until you hear about planning & zoning hearings.

And their god-given right to drive from point A to point B in a personal vehicle and park directly in front of point B.

Even trickier with current zoning laws that ban affordable multi-family homes!

Homeownership rate among retirees has never been anywhere close to 100%. Prop 13 does nothing for fixed-income renters. Meanwhile long-time homeowners get thousands of dollars from Prop 13 tax subsidies every year, no matter how rich they are.

Ah yes, homeowners who bought homes decades ago back when they only cost a few years' income, and have already paid off their mortgages, and possibly now rent their property or passed it on to heirs: the real victims of California's housing crisis.

Cool! I like Yang. Actually I like the Democratic 2020 field and I'm excited to support whoever wins.

Very much so. LA made a Faustian bargain with car dependency and it seems they can't quite get out of it yet.

If only had gotten on board for SB50, the More Homes Act. Restore property rights and loosen government restrictions on new homes that Californians desperately need. More infill and less sprawl = less carbon emissions per capita.

Yes, I do. Families do live in apartments. Car ownership is expensive. Being able to take transit is huge for equity. I don't know how else to say it.

Also factually, California YIMBY physically mailed us signature gathering packets for the split roll ballot prop. How many orgs have done that?

I'm not trying to argue with you, but just factually, I'm a member of Mountain View YIMBY, part of South Bay YIMBY, and literally everyone I know supports rolling back Prop 13. The only way in which we oppose split roll is that it doesn't go far enough!

It took dozens of cities acting individually over decades to get California into this housing crisis. Even if cities starting acting right and planning for Californians' housing needs -- which they aren't! -- it would take decades to get out of the hole. We need state action!

Which votes do you mean? I saw a chart that showed that almost all the districts where wealthy homeowners enjoy Prop 13 tax carveouts had their senators vote no on SB 50 (including Jerry Hill representing the Peninsula)
