In the past few years, the size of 3rd-party JavaScript on the web has octupled (8x), making content inaccessible to 1/3 of Americans on a metered data plan (who abandon too late after waiting and waiting and paying to download nothing they can use).

The first level of design is to make sure you have the right semantic HTML (so your content works as audio, in Reader mode, in screen readers, highly constrained devices, search engines, and more).

There’s nothing quite like landing in a NYC Taxi at JFK. Especially when it marks the completion of a MASSIVE AMOUNT OF WORK.

By saying to these schools, we’ll give you money, but only if you advocate for approved points of view, and stop advocating for what you believe... the government is sponsoring certain speech while quashing other. Illegally. Also see Esperanza v City of San Antonio.

The Supreme Court ruled that there are many kinds of government funding that the government gives out that they are not required to & they can be selective in who receives it. But they CANNOT use *Viewpoint* as a criteria. It’s a violation of the 1st Amendment. That what this is.

There's a reason that titled her talk "everything you know about web design just changed." Static mockups are becoming more of a hurdle as CSS gets more powerful. shows how much can be done without media queries.

Would you declare * {cursor: none;} No? Then don’t declare a:focus {outline: none;} For exactly the same reasons.

THIS is what violating people’s First Amendment rights looks like. It’s not when private citizens or companies apply social pressure. It’s when the government applies its power. UNC & Duke do not give in! Lawyer up! This is a clear Constitutional violation. See NEA v Finley.

Yesterday we learned that 's acting president, Alexandre Oliva, thinks Stallman's life is now "destroyed" because he is experiencing consequences for 30 years of bad behavior. Here's a thread from a bona fide academic who studies this, on whether people's lives are "ruined":

Since there now appears to be some sort of “backlash” against the deserved backlash of RMS, with plenty of people stepping in to defend Stallman, I think it’s important for me to share my own personal experience. It was brief and it is largely inconsequential, but still.

I love this podcast short contemplating what a disability actually is. Is it the body’s fault someone can’t do something — that impedes their life? Or is it society / the environment that turns an impediment into a disability?
