A lovely essay, though I don't know why Zink is so hard on Bernofsky for choosing 'motherkin'. This is not a 'portmanteau' of 'munchkin'. 'Munchkin' is a nonsense word, whose only real element is the suffix that it shares with 'motherkin', and that is cognate with German '-chen'.
