Journalism is the institution built to hold government to account. Depending on government is an obvious and indelible conflict of interest. Journalism fails at the conflict of interest caused by access. Money would make it worse.

The BBC has long been cited as ideal. But as we see, what Boris gives, Boris can threaten to take away. This is a matter not of libertarianism but of independence, not only from financial dependence but from conflict of interest. See: Germany's protectionist legislation.
