my dad also used to jokingly threaten to eat my pets (I had a duck and a rabbit), and the fact that that doesn't carry anything like the same baggage is...*argh*

(I have just realised an extra Cultural Context Thing here which is that he did NOT threaten to eat the guinea pig, though those are just as edible, they're just not standard English game animals)
