The worst part about retrocomputing is, after you’ve tracked down all the rare vintage components, found and fixed all the electronic issues, cleaned up the chassis, and gotten the thing to boot, you have to actually use an old computer

People say they used computers before 2000, but until we get some concrete evidence I'll have to conclude this was just a mass delusion

The journey is the reward :D But I know that feeling exactly, it's the same with writing emulators. Once a new emulator boots for the first time, a lot of the magic is gone, even though by far most of the work is still ahead of you ;)

Same with compiler design. Once you have Hello World running, what’s the point of continuing

And then you wonder what computers are even for! I guess you can write documents and track your budgets on them or something? What were we even doing with HyperCard in 1992? Did we only ever play games with them?

An old laptop I can see still being useful as a typewriter sort of thing for disconnected writing and thinking. Anything with CRTs or fans in it though, not worth it

Clearly we need to start a trend of classic computer cruises like the folks that restore classic cars. We can all hang out in the parking lot of the local Denny's and show off all the cool old hardware we spent a bunch of time on.

There are vintage computer festivals: There are also various museums which collect, maintain and restore vintage computing equipment. I am employed by one. Albeit, it isn't lucrative. My W2 for 2019 was $1800. So I continue to apply for secondary jobs.
