Julie Phillips
The question has come up whether Alice Sheldon (James Tiptree, Jr) and her husband Ting died by suicide or murder-suicide. I regret not saying clearly in the bio that those closest to the Sheldons all told me that they had a pact and that Ting's health was failing. 1/

I plan to do some more research on this when I get a chance. But I checked my notes for evidence. In an interview, Walter Pforzheimer, one of Ting's closest friends, told me that Ting didn't have long to live, and that they chose suicide together. 2/

Ting's son Peter Sheldon also said there was a pact, and that Ting was declining. Alli probably wanted to die more than Ting did. But the pact didn't have to do with his blindness or disability. He was going, and they chose to go out together. Does this help? 4/4

Thanks, for being clear now, and for expressing your wish that you had been clearer then (I remember this being clear to me in the book, but it has been a long time).

I found writing about the end of their lives painful, and still do. Because I didn't want to have to write it, I didn't steer the story as carefully as I should have. I know I wasn't clear enough, because the question has been coming up ever since the book came out.

Assisted suicide would seem to be the definition I held in mind. Something that society considers more reasonable these days. ?

It's not quite the same. It's complicated.

I've been defending Ms. Sheldon over at the Tiptree Twitter feed and I feel that your post helps her in the long run. Hers was a sad end but it is the end she chose for herself. Thank You for your comments.

They might have had a pact, but how do you know it wasn't coerced by Alli over a decade? And how do you know that Ting was "ready"? Allegedly he was sleeping, and Alli admitted to her lawyer on the phone that he hadn't consented to this. So, how do you *KNOW* it wasn't murder?
