" Because of overparameterization, the degeneracy of solutions changes the nature of the problem from finding a needle in a haystack to a haystack of needles." The unreasonable effectiveness of deep learning in artificial intelligence

Some really fascinating results linking functional characterizations of optically recorded synaptic inputs and EM reconstructions of the synapses to challenge theories of Hebbian learning's role in shaping selectivity in Ferret V1

Additionally, does anyone have handy a list of journals that accept .tex for the final submission? Because that would be great!

Same. I also tried GrindEQ, which did better with the equations but failed to get the citations.

Second this. I just had to convert a manuscript from latex to word. Can confirm the word equation editor is unbearable

Exactly. At least some version of that. There's plenty of evidence to suggest it's not always true, although I think there will be principles that emerge from looking across species.

Haha I was thinking of that account. In their defense, they do say "in mice". It's just that mouse V1 didn't make it into the textbook so the claims don't quite work

We can all see that logic doesn't work, but it gets much more nuanced when it comes to neural coding, which reinforces the point that we don't really know all that much. Anyway, none of this takes away from the quality of the data. Also, fund more cross species comparative work!

I do really like the approach of the . I just think there's something funny about how the work is presented. E.g., "The textbook says that 50% of visual cortex represents 2% of visual space (true in primate). We tested this (in mouse) and the textbook is wrong."

“It’s not that the previous studies were all a big mistake, it’s just that those cells turn out to be a very small fraction of all neurons in the cortex”... Or, past studies were in monkey and cat and mouse is different (can't say yet). The work is great, but the hype is not.

I'm gonna say bird/insect swarms... Does that count? Or do we need to find a single organism that does it?

Reminds me of the cuttlefish. Apparently, this strategy (drifting gratings to hijack visual systems) has been selected by more than just vision scientists.

Great work from Kate Bonnen and colleagues. The geometry of having two eyes matters quite a bit for producing selectivity to motion through depth

Life sciences are getting a lot of heat for animal-based research. Noted, there is room for improvement. However, a back-of-the-envelope calculation learns that we can make a far bigger difference in other areas of human activity. Food & Exp numbers, worldwide.

The Borneo rainforest is on fire. This is a huge hit to the species that live in the area (including 130 orangutans) and to the climate. Any donation helps.
