Jayson Stark
Talked with a baseball official about the luxury tax mess the would find themselves in if they signed Harper. He said they’d be stuck in the 90 percent tax bracket pretty much “forever.”

Can the luxury tax be negotiated or removed when the players union and owners meet again in a couple years. I think the players are going to ask for that at the next collective bargaining. What do you think ?

Except the Nats defer a significant amount of money on a lot of their salaries, which effectively & significantly lowers their AAV salary hit under the current CBA rules.

In which case, Harper wouldn't wanna stay and have ALOT of his "record breaking deal" deferred.

If we must have one, I think its time for a new kind of luxury tax, where in addition to the teams that exceed the tax threshold, the bottom teams get taxed if they dont spend a certain amount and are ineligible for any monetary compensation, compensatory picks etc.

Stark's person must think he is getting $40+ million a year where the tax penalties are harsher.

But most of those deals are for 1-2 years, I don’t understand how that puts them above the threshold “forever”. And Zim comes off the books in a year.

Zimmerman's big salary comes off the books at the end of 2019, Scherzer at the end of 2022, Strasburg at the end of 2023. Just sayin.
