We need more software co-ops, owned by their users. The Audacity thing really proves that even the oldest projects aren't immune to the incentives towards data-harvesting that come with being a for-profit company.

Also, note that there's a difference between worker-owned and user-owned (both make sense, in different situations). We specifically think that the user-owned model would be ideal for software that's aimed at creative professionals.

The possibility of data-harvesting should have been a concern when the project went corporate in the first place (a while ago, we're told). Data harvesting is a rational response to the incentives that come with being a for-profit company.

It's not about good intent or bad intent, it's that once you've situated yourself inside capitalism, the system pushes you in a certain direction no matter how you feel about it.

It's not that being structured as a co-op is magic, it doesn't make your organization immune to pay-offs or hostile takeovers. It does create some resilience that makes it easier to fight back, and we think that's worth it.

Whilst I entirely agree with you... As an information security professional, the Audacity licence sections people are panicking about are boring legal compliance for anything that collects any metrics.
