Some 250,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh in the 1990s. Authorities were again accused of forcing refugees back. Researchers of a 1994 report by Refugees International said they witnessed officials in Bangladesh beating people who refused to cooperate.

In the late 1970s, a military operation drove 200,000 Rohingya into Bangladesh. Authorities cut food rations to force the refugees to return. MSF says roughly 10,000 people died.
