A thread/sincere plea: if you a member of the mainstream/popular press and are writing an article about fandom, you can officially nix any of the following, as it has already been written in 20+ other "101" style articles about fans/fan culture:

Any version of "fan is short for 'fanatic,' which comes from the Latin fanaticus" unless you're REALLY going to dig in and actually address the religious connotations and not just make a passing crack about "The Force."

Don't offer a hesitant and embarrassed anecdote about how you ALSO were super into something once, though now you've grown out of it. You love evoking this SNL sketch but don't seem to recognize your own iterations of it.

If you insist on bringing up "Stan" culture, at least go listen to this or talk to (who is featured here) or others who will go beyond Eminem origin stories and give you less obvious test cases:

Stop telling on yourself by acting shocked that people are in cosplay at a convention. Not having been to cons isn't an excuse, there are ample cosplayers on instagram and tons of awesome # activism around this topic on twitter. Interview someone in a costume you DON'T recognize.

Never, EVER use the word "Cumberbitches" again. Like...I get it. It's fun. It adds some naughty "color" to your civilized ethnographic jaunt. Enough.

Yes, toxicity in fan culture is a thing we need to talk about. It's complex. But please stop hinging this the same 1-3 examples that are now years old and got exhaustive coverage. Find a more contemporary test case that lets you perform a slightly more nuanced read.

I get that you are writing for a general readership, but you don't need to always play up the stranger in a strange land angle. If you are that deeply anxious about being affiliated with the subjects you're writing about, maybe that is a problem.

I already know which 10 media properties you're going to reference in your article. Ready?

Will pick this up again tomorrow, but it should be noted here that fan studies also suffers from this issue of common test cases. If I was silver lining this point, I would say "all the more reason to go read some fan studies before writing one of these pieces."

Actually, maybe there's just one more and I can put this (and me) to bed. If you are purportedly writing about fans, don't actually write all about industry (how they view fans, "manage" fans, etc. etc.) and sideline what you claim to be centering.
