I'm just watching a programme called ' a place in the Sun ' where middle aged retired white couples immigrate and change the culture of European beach communities. My question is why are these people called ' ex pats ' and not immigrants?

I wonder what it will take for devs to start building things securely. Feels like threat modelling should be an integral part of software planning and development.

Sometimes a team won’t work well with standups. So we need to find another way to surface problems early.

Get over it sounds too harsh. I should spend more time on my words. I mean, if you’ve done your best to create a safe space to share honestly the work being done and the problems experienced and people still don’t feel comfortable doing it then things need changing.

If there were people on the team who just couldn’t get over it then we’d need to change the format to enable them to meaningfully participate while doing what they need to do guilt free. People over processes.

I’ve found that’s a factor of the culture though. If the team lead makes it safe by them selves doing such things then, in time it becomes a norm for the rest of the team. Creates a bit of psychological safety.

This seems like a culture problem. “I spent the day thinking” “tomorrow I plan to continue thinking” “no problems at the moment” Should be a totally fine stand up.

But, you do you. No one has figured out hiring so we’re all as wrong as each other.

Thats how you accidentally end up hiring a team of people all with the same background, same views etc. Good for short term cohesion, bad for long term effectivity.

FYI this is something I used to butt up against all the time while teaching. Your applicants are going to be pretty diverse. Questions that assume a particular context that isn’t directly linked to the thinga being assessed unfairly penalised those without the background.

Whats your rubric for depth of understanding of front end? What does it mean to understand front end beyond a frame work? IMO the later is easier to assess with a simple question around how they would update the dom without a framework.

Juniors haven’t lived that life man. They don’t remember the messy hell of imperative dom updates and tbh, i’d rather forget. It’s feel like a nice topic for dicussion but making it a formal question feels a but contrived. I woukd question any meaning you derived from an answer

how did we used to wake up at 7am for school, run for 2 hours at sports practice and then read text books 5 days a week without a sip of coffee?

Request for help 🙋🏻‍♀️We're looking for an expert in accessible design and development, particularly for mobile apps. We've done a good first draft of our plan and checklist internally but we'd like some help from a consultant. DM me, @ me or email bailey@usetoucan.com. Thanks!🙏

I’ve hired a few people in my time. I’ve never been disappointed by hiring someone who is less technical but is a great human who cares for others. I can teach tech pretty easily. But boy have I seen people who are strong technical people with toxic attitudes destroy a team.
