Montana state employee resigns in protest of ICE request to track down undocumented workers

Montana legal secretary Jordon Dyrdahl-Roberts (@dyrbert) resigned from the state's labor department to protest the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency's apparent request for information to track down undocumented workers. "I refuse to aid in the breaking up of families," he explained.

So, yeah, about that. I put in my two weeks notice. I work at Montana Department of Labor. There were going to be ICE subpoenas for information that would end up being used to hunt down & deport undocumented workers.

It would have been my responsibility to prepare the information and hand them off to ICE. I refuse to aid in the breaking up of families. I refuse to just “follow orders.” This isn’t an easy decision as it puts me in a delicate financial position.

I’ve got a toddler, an underemployed wife in grad school & two cats. There’s about $900 in my checking account.

People have asked why am I doing this if I have a child. I’m doing this because I have a child. I want to be able to look my child in eye.

So many people are waiting on the 2018 elections, but many people being targeted by this administration don’t have that long. I’m drawing my line in the sand here. Cooperation with this regime is not acceptable.

There are people who “support my decision” but seem disinclined to do much else. It’s frustrating. I’ve been asking, “when do we riot,” but increasingly it seems to be that the answer is never.

Thank you, Jordon. I’ve had to quit a job because of rampant employee safety issues that were not being addressed, but not in your circumstances. I am broke, otherwise I would so gladly chip in, but I’m glad to RT. So proud of the choice you made - you are a great American.

I wish they were more than words, but they certainly come from the bottom of my heart. 😊 You made the choice all decent people *hope* we’d make. Had my father’s family not been allowed to immigrate to the US from Austria in ‘27, none of them would have survived the Holocaust.

And my relatives came here by way of Wales to Canada as indentured servants then crossed into Minnesota. They were given a path to citizenship. They didn't have PhDs. Not all could even read. Diversity is our strength.

That’s not really how subpoenas work

Yes, obstruction comes with risks. But if we are serious about keeping immigrant families together, if we understand the risks to them, resistance is taking on a small fraction of those risks for ourselves. We don’t deserve to be with our families any more than they do.

Some people have asked, and I’ve started a paypal. If you’ve got some extra cash kicking around and my words on writing, depression, politics, whatever have helped, feel free to throw some my way.

THIS. This is how we stop this administration. It takes the courage and integrity of people who refuse to just follow orders. This is the example.
