BF producer Kyoko Uryu interview: "The scene of Ash crying on top of Eiji's knee was done wonderfully, I think the moment where, within Ash, Eiji's existence became indispensable was that scene".

Cute... その言葉を聞いて驚く英二に、アッシュは少し照れ臭そうな表情を浮かべるのだった。 To Eiji, who was surprised by these words, Ash had a slightly shy look on his face.

Nojima on voicing Eiji: "But with regard to Eiji's feelings, likewise he's always simply been watching Ash who's being cornered, (but) regardless is a presence who brings comfort to Ash, is what (I) constantly am consciously doing. There's a bit of a mild nuance."

More Utsumi: Because for Ash, with loss of the very important presence of his brother and Shorter, he never thought he'd feel the same again, and so he had tried protecting Eiji all the more; that was the feeling that the reflective image gave off.

Utsumi on having Shorter and Griffith in the 2nd cour OP: The staff as well happily went, "And here we didn't think there'd be any new images of Shorter in the second cour." Indeed, the Shorter who passed away who exists in Ash, may be a seed that has remained with him still, 1/

Utsumi on the "Dawn" symbolism in the BF anime: "Dawn" means so much in this work, doesnt it? However, since manga doesn't have color, (I) believe it would be difficult to express dawn there, and that's where animation has the advantage, in incorporating dawn more effectively 1/

in the narrative. However, using it too much tends to lessen its impact, so we tried to limit its use in ep11. The scene in episode 23 where Ash prays to God also has dawn; both of which were by the window and gave a foreboding air, and both of which are very important scenes. 2/

(We) made the location an abandoned orphanage to further highlight and make the prayer more impactful. (We) approached this scene artistically to impress the figure of Ash who supposedly doesn't believe in God worrying about Eiji so much that he ends up praying to God anyway. 3/3

Utsumi on ep 18: In episode 18, where Eiji asks Ash, "Would you like to go to Japan with me?", that scene was also pretty memorable. At that time, Ash had already decided to go to Golzine in order to protect Eiji, so Ash knows he cannot go; 1/3

instead he asks Eiji, "What kind of place is Japan?" When thinking about what feelings are there in that scene, we would involuntarily cry in the middle of working on (it). Again, the line "I will NEVER let anyone hurt you" that goes after that is also very memorable. 2/3

Before this she said “Besides, without Lao's line in the original, one would go "what has become" of Ash?”” which suggests they intentionally cut stuff to leave the ending ambiguous

Dunno what he meant, but Nojima said: Ash may be Eiji in parallel world, Eiji may be Ash as well; such similar (like-minded?) existences shall meet in the same world, shall make one aware of one's own existence, of (one's own) reason for living, (and) make one aware of love.

Utsumi on the ending: And the way people perceive the last scene may change depending on the viewer. More than what was depicted in Banana Fish's "Garden of Light", although the outcome cannot be changed, I believe it is all right to view another possibility as well.

Okay here’s a translation of what Utsumi said about the ending: Interviewer: Since Lao & Ash's final dialogue was cut in the anime, it was beyond painful that Ash's last word was "Eiji". Utsumi: Without a doubt. . . . . . Although I can't help but say it's unintentional 1/2

Utsumi: “When I read the original for the first time (...) the last scene, more than being surprised, I thought "Will it really happen?" . . . It was sad, but at the same time quite fitting as well; it was a last scene that would very much remain in one's heart.”

Utsumi: "If you cut [AshEiji scenes], Ash's happiness would be diminished. I would never do that, so like I said "accumulation" was very important. It's not a story where you can have that kind of scenes only a few times, so I asked to keep all the scenes between those two".

The interviewer reminded Utsumi of what she said before, that "the most important thing in animating Banana Fish is 'Ash and Eiji's relationship', that those two's scenes would be cut down as little as possible. I always felt that it would be the accumulation for the last scene."

Utsumi: There were many slice-of-life scenes between [Ash and Eiji] where the story would be fine if they were omitted. Then why remove so little? Because it was those two's scenes, when Ash was being saved by Eiji, that made me feel happy.

Interviewer: Ash's last expression was drawn very impressively, is there a particular point to it? Utsumi: This story's conclusion may look like a bad ending at first, but that's wrong, because of Ash's last expression, I'm glad that it was conveyed that "Ash is happy".
