Also many nooks and crannies with mismatched old (comfortable) furniture. And sitting areas for grabbing a coffee or eating your lunch that everyone would pass by on their way to the office, spill-over from discussion groups in classes etc. Lots of serendipity and smiles.

One of my favorite spaces is where I did my PhD at @OISEUofT, an ugly brutalist building with very unfriendly offices (but calm/quiet). However, really wonderful lounges with beautiful art (advantage of being surrounded by primary educators), couches etc.

Makes me think of my own relationship to space - as a remote worker in a co-working space, as a regular visitor to the Minerva Office. @studyhacksblog discussed the MIT Building 20 and suggested a "hub-and-spokes" model for innovation/serendipity.

Interesting to read what @jskjott writes about the physical layout of @recursecenter. Made me think about how @MinervaSchools does not provide any physical space (other than residences), and what it would look like if we did. jskjott.com/#/space pic.twitter.com/pubqy6qKUN

At some point, hopefully Roam will have differential sync - the idea of sending the entire db every time you sync is not only inefficient as the db grows, but also causing this... A talk about operational transforms I gave as part of my interview@Minerva youtube.com/watch?v=gN37rJ…

I had several tabs trying to export as Markdown time out. Finally it worked. Exporting as JSON is much faster. (Didn't lose much work luckily).

One, twitter taught me this years ago and I thank you. Two, after years of seeing this I have concluded that saying “oh I don’t need a mic” makes many of my colleagues feel like rock stars. It feels like something a badass would do...if you’ve never known an actual badass twitter.com/ambermlayne/st…

Great, that's on my long reading list, but I'll bump it up. Appreciate it.

I keep seeing the terms modern, metamodern etc (also heard it discussed in podcasts). What would be the best reading to understand the thinking behind?

For your work, which is much more thorough in engaging with the source text, this makes perfect sense. And in an ideal world, all this kind of metadata would be automatically captured by our note taking tools (assuming digital) anyway, so we wouldn't have to even think about it.

As somebody who worked for Xanadu, I still maintain that 'real' hypertext is less like 'what if clicking on blue words replaced my screen with a different screen' and more like 'what if marginal notes went on forever in every direction and i could see all of them at once'.

In them are not particularly brilliant. Although I wonder if his criteria are a bit too ambitious, we can't all be Luhman, found a new academic discipline etc... But I guess his goal is really to invent technologies that help the 1% thinkers go even further @andy_matuschak

Private conversation, but I think I've read it publicly as well. Actually recently in Twitter. Basically the idea that with a few notable exceptions, à lot of the most brilliant minds don't seem to use very elaborate tools for thought, and a lot of us who are very invested

And even ability to automatically open PDF on the right page. Cool to demo, but in practice almost never used. Also most of my reading is on Kindle where page number is less relevant anyway.

What's the purpose though? My goal is to never have to return to the full text. Must of my reading is not for academic publishing, but some is. However in my field you only require page number with a verbatim quote, which is rare. During PhD I had pages generated by PDF reader

Let me know how it goes! I need to keep reading that book - this was just what I needed to get started, but I found it very helpful.

I have a public @RoamResearch db to store the reading notes I took on computer-supported collaborative learning during my PhD (imported from Dokuwiki), and I occasionally copy over notes from my private db to share. Don't think so, unless you have some tag above all of your tasks (like
[[daily]]
- [ ] do this
- [ ] do that
... It would be nice to be able to filter on all daily pages, but not yet.)

By default new databases are private unless you've explicitly turned on sharing. Note that sharing individual pages is currently not safe - make a separate db for sharing.

Hi @jskjott, fun to see you here! There are a few people at Minerva starting to get excited about Roam. I just met Conor in SF in January, and organized a Roam meetup in Minerva offices :) We should connect some time.
