In the newest post for Dragonfly Research, @ashwinrz and I tell the story of the life and death of Plasma.
Two years ago, it was supposed to be Ethereum's saving grace. Now it's been completely left behind. What exactly happened, and why did Plasma die?

Nicely written! I like the combination of technical details and the story of ethereum during that period. Question: it says in zk roll up transaction data can be thrown away. But I think it does need to be stored in block?

No, it is passed as function arguments (known as "calldata") but not persisted to state. This allows archive nodes, which store all historical blocks, to reconstruct the current state—essentially, it bloats archive nodes without bloating full nodes (which store current state).

great post, although i still find it disappointing that off-chain plasma is ditched, rollup makes the scaling problem information propagation, but only so far you can publish data globally, more a sharding solution

Actually @StarkWareLtd is pursuing a design somewhat similar to Plasma with ZK-rollup elements (basically data is off-chain, but on-chain proofs of correctness). See: medium.com/starkware/star…

@0xinterstate and @OffchainLabs are working on optimstic rollups with evm smart contract support as well, don't count us out just yet 😁
Expect to see more collab between the OR teams, especially in aggregate signature schemes where we'll all go to the moon @fuellabs_ 😆

Why not mention the whole story? See the reply of Vitalik Buterin.
