No other textbook, and possibly no other book, will ever have a better opening paragraph than Goodstein's "States of Matter":

“It took me 2 days to figure out that this identity was the trick being played in code I was modifying.” This is an example of the true cost of self (non-)documenting code.

And more precisely, it appears that you're absolutely correct: in Unicode, character = code point. Which only helps to increase confusion for those who just want to work with strings of text.

Ugh. You're right to be picky, because it really matters in Unicode. For some reason I thought “character” was a loose term that corresponded to an extended grapheme cluster. But no, Unicode defines character to include things that have “semantic meaning”or “abstract value”.

In the face of Unicode, programming languages would do well to drop the concept of a dedicated character type entirely. In Unicode, a character (also referred to as an extended grapheme cluster) is best defined as a string of length one.

Yes, but I choose to use the word “character”, because this is what frequently trips up many developers.

Unicode tip of the day. A character is one or more code points. A code point is one or more code units. A code unit is one or more bytes. That is all.

At this point, you might want to draw from the development branch, which has a considerable number of fixes and improvements. Release coming Feb-Mar.

To count an animal population if you can't catch them all: capture some, mark them, release, and capture again. The ratio of new vs already seen tells you something about the total number. Shown here is iterated mark-and-recapture with a Bayesian updates to belief about pop size

Pixels are a length unit of graphic design because most web designers couldn't handle the idea of resolution independence (sizing fonts in points or mm). So we forced an arbitrary length of 1/96nd of an inch, called that a "pixel", and designers toddled away happy.

`git rebase --interactive` needs a "rework" verb. Secret spell is to `edit` a change, and then at that point issue the command `git reset --mixed @^`. Rework changes and then `git rebase --continue` when done.

If it's not late, you might want to check out the development branch. There have been a lot of good updates since v2.0.0.
