ICYMI: Last week, Janelia’s FlyEM team released the most detailed wiring diagram of the fly brain yet. The map contains about 25,000 neurons and covers about a third of the fly brain. The team is on track to map the whole fly nervous system by 2022.

Even with parts of the process automated, mapping 25,000 neurons in the fly has taken huge amounts of human effort. More than 100 people have been involved, including teams who proofread neural reconstructions produced by computers.

Rather than manually trace the path of every neuron in the fly , Janelia’s FlyEM team collaborated with Google researchers, who developed algorithms to automatically pick out neurons from the microscope data.

“By mining the data, which is publicly available + free to all, scientists will be able to identify the sequence of neurons that fire when a fruit fly detects the irresistible aroma of rotting banana, or follows a garbage truck like a long-lost love, among many other behaviors.”

A new microscope technique shows cells’ fine structure in new detail. The method, developed by Eric Betzig, Harald Hess + colleagues, combines 3D super-resolution fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy in whole cells. Published today in Science!

Fantastic work from Yoshi Aso and Gerry Rubin showing that in flies, some dopaminergic neurons use nitric oxide as a co-transmitter to induce memories of opposite valence: We wrote an Insight article about the work:
