Well, I suppose you're all due for an explanation.

Around the middle of last summer we were approached by someone who claimed to have Gen 1 prototypes and wanted to remain anonymous. We communicated via a private IRC channel of their making, and they provided us with some answers.

At first, we were skeptical, as you should be when someone makes a claim like this. However, at the time we were working on the Kaiju Zukan enhancements. We were the only ones who had seen Kotora in slot 159, and when asked to see 159, there it was in full detail.

We pushed to get dumps of these prototypes, but they wouldn't budge on that. We assume they were a collector and wanted to keep the value of what they had, but apparently recent events inspired them to at least give up some details of what was within the games.

We were given a zip of ripped ROM assets. All but 7* backsprites of the unused Pokemon were there, along with the mysterious unused maps surrounding Lance, confirmation of who Chief was, an entire earlier tileset and Kanto itself, and even some technical data from earlier on.

We're unsure why the front sprites weren't there, the donor wouldn't answer that question. After a few more questions and answers were exchanged about the material (mostly questions about the maps and where they fit/what they had on them), the donor then disappeared.

So we had to make a choice. How do you reveal something like this? Posting it without understanding the material ourselves would result in a lot of misinformation being spread around. So, we made a decision.

Racie was going to be at Pokethon and had planned to play SW97's translation patch there because there's no way that wouldn't be out by February, right? ...Anyways, we decided to try and slot these assets back into the game via romhack and to reveal them on-stream, unannounced.

So, for about half a year, we worked on interpreting everything about what we had and found a few people capable of making romhacks (that also wish to remain anonymous considering the attention this is probably going to bring).

Over 100 front sprites were made for our interpretations. I personally spent a month writing all of the new text. Somehow, they managed to get that thing running for the stream literally today.

(Side note: The ROMs aren't finished, some of the nasty crashes and bugs were intentionally avoided. HC's work on it is finished and we'd all appreciate if you let them work in peace for however long it takes. We're not setting a time frame because there's no way we can know.)

So, without further ado, here's some answers (and new questions) to some of the longest running mysteries in gaming: (Reports of this site not working on Chrome from the owner. Firefox works fine and I'm sure there will be mirrors everywhere soon)

And here's the preliminary article on our findings. The first article of many. Many.
