New paper alert!: Is the P300/P3b a neural signature of perceptual awareness? We combined a visual masking paradigm with a no-report paradigm and found that it is not.

Super excited to be able to share a preprint of the first paper to come out of my PhD! We used ’s methods to isolate neural populations in the human brain that respond more to music than to other sounds, and compared responses in musicians & nonmusicians. (1/5)

I can’t tell you the number of times people threatened to call social services on me if I didn’t do x. In my case those threats didn’t lead to an investigation. But, given my background (foster kid, no family, etc) one call & I guarantee it would have been a full investigation.

I’ve heard of many instances of non-abusive experiences being flagged and investigated for ludicrous reasons.

I think experiences in the typical range likely are getting flagged — that doesn’t seem at all unlikely to me. People from low SES (i.e. people like me before grad school) spend an inordinate amount of time in fear of a CPS investigation.

It seems like they were conservative in statistical adjustments in order to prevent an overestimation of investigation rates. Not an expert in this field (I study typically developing infant brains) but, as someone that grew up in foster care, I believe it.

Yes, babies make it quite obvious when they are no longer willing to participate. If babies (or parents) are unhappy or uncomfortable at any time, we stop the study. Having happy parents and happy babies is critical!!

To participate, infants must be: - full term - metal free - no neurodevelopmental delays Happy to email/chat more with anyone that has questions/concerns. mit.kids.brains@gmail.com Thanks for asking!

Just their ages! And they have to be able to get to MIT with parental consent. Speech/music babies need to be in a home that speaks primarily English. Happy to email if you have more questions!

I have a new paper out! To reason physically about the world, the brain encodes abstract representations of key variables (like mass) that generalize across scene differences. This invariance is what we'd expect to support a physics engine in the brain:
