If your child (often a middle schooler) doesn't want to be on camera, ask why. Much of the time, it's not because they don't want others to see THEM -- it's distracting to see THEMSELVES. If that's the case, they can minimize self-consciousness by hiding their own video window.

I hear you. I made a similar choice many years ago. I left my doctoral program in Russian lit to teach high school English, and I’ve never regretted that decision. I actually taught more Russian lit to more high schoolers than I ever would have as an academic in higher ed.
