Writing books isn't important? Being a writer isn't important? Seriously? In the current climate, humanity falling apart at the seams, this is when our words carry more importance than ever before. Rewrite reality. Offer hope. Rebuild trust.

Still seems incredible to have my novel in a bookstore in New York. Five years ago I'd had over 120 rejections from agents & the idea of writing becoming my full-time job seemed beyond ridiculous. If you're trying to get published, keep going, keep learning, keep at it.

I do envy novelists. You're just so clever. How does one even start writing novels? What is the first thing you do before you write?

Writers don’t write from experience, though many are resistant to admit that they don’t. I want to be clear about this. If you wrote from experience, you’d get maybe one book, maybe three poems. Writers write from empathy. NIKKI GIOVANNI
