q1 My target audience is literally just "me when I was fifteen". When I was fifteen I was just discovering webcomics but it was hard to find stuff that was written with young non-edgy teens in mind, so I wanted to make a comic for that niche hahaha

A1 My target audience is SFF nerds of at least YA-reading age who like jokes that don't punch down, angst that isn't too grimdark, and LGBT characters who get to be everywhere & do everything. Also cats, but on the internet I think that's a given.

Folks who like cyberpunk or dystopian settings? People who like anthropomorphic ("furry") art? I mean, it's a story in the former genres and I suck even worse at drawing humans than I do at animals, so... ;)

Q4: In Soul's Journey the wolves are rather stylised, while other animals less so. I was more comfortable portraying them that way when I started out and just rolled with it. They're also main characters, so they deserved the same treatment as the humans :P

It also makes them easier to redraw and distinguish in the ink stage, I find.

Well, knowing your audience means knowing what fan groups/sites to try advertising on. It also helps you in tagging comics on galleries and social media in such a way someone might happen across them.

Q3: If a creator doesn’t know who their target audience is, what tools or practices can a creator use to find out who it is?

Its not really exclusive to animals, but I have a real problem with eyes. Mine are always stylized and making 'real' eyes is difficult

Q2 it can be a good idea to know who youre writing for to keep better focus, but that doesnt mean youll get the one you thought you did. I wrote for queer teen girls, but my audience is predominantly adult males according to my analytics.

A2 They should have a general idea of where the target they are trying to strike is. More than playing to the audience they should be doing it for themselves. Successful people say authenticity resonates

Again, I'm gonna stick to talking genre: Read books/comics & watch films in the genre. Even w/o checking TVTropes, you should be able to figure out some common elements. Hang out with fans of the genre, see what _they_ like as opposed to 'professional' reviewers.
