When I ask my daughter what she wants to be when she grows up, she says "the Moon." Her father scoffs. I explain the Moon is a lump of rock and suggest she'd rather be a teacher or a nurse. 15 years on, I sit alone at and watch my daughter rise.

"How's the learning going, sir?" "Awful Haskins, what does mean?" "Isn't it hell and devils and stuff?" "That's demonic." "A cruel ruler?" "Despotic." "I've got it sir. If you've got a nervous tic, and you show how it goes, that's a demo-tic." "Perfect."

"I know I don't like your wife sir, but you must have once." "When we first met, I couldn't get enough of her, Haskins" "I've seen pictures, she was ugly as sin." "Looks aren't everything Haskins. She was a wild, fun, free spirit. She me up on our 1st date."

Sometimes we are too far away From the fly caught in the others web And so when we hear the abominable trembles We fail even to sweat at what we know comes next That simple extinguishing of hope Played upon a violin We heard the plea for help And failed Again

Yes I grow tired of the rage I see in the eyes of others Beam it at the pricks in charge With their abominable nature What road did they start on To think this one is right Fucker that put up the signs Should be shot in the kneecap

One time, I did such a powerful facepalm, that my eyes, nose and mouth got stuck to my hand. Forever. People say it's nothing to worry about. Makes me unique. They often high-five me to show they're still my friend. But it always just feels like a slap in the face.

When my child said "I'm hungry." My years of training with the ancient masters kicked in. I had spent years mastering the Face/Palm technique of the old lands. My body was honed--sharpened like a dagger--for this very moment. "Hi, Hungry. I'm Dad."

Through the tracks of my bloodshot eyes A lake of abomination, deep as black Therein dwells the ghosts of woe Their bodies long since made the fall And though like prehistoric bones Into pits of greedy tar So there they are forever trapped Beware then traveller

"Good weekend, Haskins?" "Lovely sir, apart from a real moment." "I wouldn't know what that is, I don't use social media." "No, facepalm sir." "That's right. No facepalm, no twatter, no slaptwat." "No instagram?" "Instagram? Drugs are illegal, Haskins."

Behind a dreams cobweb, which moved back and forth, to the whispers of Parisian streets, eclectic photons danced, upon an oil painting, artist unknown, cardboard tag named the price. Your face stared back at me from a canvas dressed before your birth.

Malinger then demented shadow Who commissioned you to draw the curtain Whose trumpet with your feigned repose Did you think to blow through fog What game have you pulled from dust to play Nought that I should chose to cross & yet your act rolls without snakes eyes opening

He expertly balanced presenteeism with malingering, hacking up ghastly fluid on days the work was sexy, bedridden with sniffles on the mundane days. We liked the malingerer better.

Behind midnight I feel something lurking Hands of the clock drag me toward it I can't see its face or yet know its nature But I feel a malevolence fracturing the future Malingering there with a promise of nothing A sloughed premonition of a clown without makeup
