K Tempest "There Can Be Only One" Bradford May 13
I haven't spoken about this here. I'm one of the 2018 VONA fellows. I was still planning to attend. But this policy regarding refunds has me angry and disappointed. No one should have to take a hit financially to feel safe.

I am HIGH key disappointed that this conversation has focused on what Junot Diaz means to people, and not what those who have experience his violence are asking for. Y’all need to follow the hashtag, and help support these incredibly brave writers.

updates: the vona fb page was changed from public to private, a new code of conduct that was advised by lawyers was put into place and an afrolatina community member was blocked for her responses to those defending jd not being "respectful"

As folks come forward about 's abuse, I can't help but think about how little the lit world values women/nb/femme writers of color. How many would have been spared if our voices/bodies were seen as important? We can change that:

is putting me in such a deeply grateful space. writers of color and our allies making a stand to protect survivors and end "whisper networks" and the specialized violence that threatens our careers and lives, everyday. Join us:

I signed the statement because I hope all our communities will reckon with accountability and build better spaces for us to share. Many organizations could benefit from the structural changes and practices in this list of demands.

I've applied to VONA many times, never been accepted to go but I still signed the petition in solidarity because an injury to one of us is an injury to all.

I've read and signed 's response to the decision. Please consider signing. I'm going to this summer and the situation has been a huge distraction.

Thanks to the leadership who invested time and emotional labor to write this letter including faculty. I'm going to this summer but not without some reservations. Silencing does not benefit the silenced.

The entire thread and blog piece say it all. I'm going to VONA this summer but none too happy how while not present is still present and impacting my writing. His legacy is infamous, something he did all on his own.

checking in as i still haven't been refunded my deposit for VONA, though i know two people who have been refunded. i feel frustrated, tired, helpless & as if i am being punished for feeling unsafe in an institution that didn't address harmful dynamics within it

it is also really distressing to keep having to email administration about this. please continue to share & sign. refunds for students who don't feel safe attending are one of the demands

Same. I'm supposed to go Week 2. Haven't paid tuition balance yet but booked my flight before all this blew up. And then that open letter in the yesterday. What was supposed to be a great writing workshop feels less good every day.

And was it strategic that most names are likely female? And why a letter to the Editor about "media treatment" not a specific person/group of people? Feels a bit passive aggressive. I'm supposed to go to VONA in June. Questioning my decision.

Update from POC school: donor has come forward, students will receive 50% refund on deposits if students are choosing to withdraw. Thanks to the donor but . . . VONA can do
