So apparently writing 9 is way more than average. Especially when none of them led directly to work? But every year when my mom would proof my latest spec, she’d be like — I see why you’re sticking with this, you’re good at it. So that was nice.

The day I realized writing a spec was a respectable way of writing fanfiction

I've written: Dexter Sons of Anarchy The Good Wife Arrested Development 30 Rock When I started out I'd write whatever show I loved, no matter if it was comedy or drama. I wanted people to feel my passion on the page. A couple got me jobs. All made my writing stronger.

I’ve written: UnREAL Riverdale Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Succession ... and if you count episode-length fan fiction, then also Buffy and The West Wing. Writing specs is my favorite thing - like putting on someone else’s cozy coat and making it your own.

Oh, this is fun! 30 Rock New Girl Girls Master of None I should spec a drama lol. But my last spec helped get me my first baby staff job. 10/10 would recommend writing at least a spec a year. They’re great practice for what a staffed writer does.

My list: Took a Gotham Tv writing course in NYC. We were required to write a LAW & ORDER to learn act structure. That was my 1st pancake script. Then I wrote a HOUSE & a WEEDS. Stand by those. Was working a DEXTER when I got my 1st gig. Showing a range of voices is helpful

I've Written: - Broad City - Veep (shouldn't have attempted but I did) - Atlanta - and found a spec for the web series Hello Cupid. My Atlanta spec is pretty wild and features both Tupac and Whitney Houston. And got me into NBC Writers on the Verge. I love that script.

I've written New Girl and Veep . Honestly, I think my Veep spec is the best thing I've ever written. Also, both shows went on to do story lines that I wrote in my specs, which is how I know I did a great job. I wish showrunners read specs for off-the-air shows.

Loving all the insight on my timeline today. It’s managed to drown out most of bad twitter and get me excited to write a spec, so definitely a win. Now I just have to decide which show to pull from 🤔
