Smokey Bear Historical Park, , NM was established to honor Smokey, the little bear cub that was found with burned paws after a 17,000-acre forest fire in 1950 on the Capitan Mountains near Capitan, New Mexico.

Be sure you obtain an open burning permit online at . Permits are free. Check the weather and be fully prepared. Have a water source and a cellphone nearby. Remember what says... keep your debris pile small, not tall.
