Day 180 When Sura was paralysed, we couldn’t walk too much, she fought her way back to walk & we had a good 18 months making short 1/2 mile walks. Koda, we’re walking 4 to 5 miles a day now, plus 3 1/2 mph, adventures through the fields.

Day 180 It’s been a harrowing few days, especially for Ma, as we make photography & record audio testimony, so I decided on a 48 hr cool down. I spoke with Helena via video call & Tilney1 via phone, he’s doing well.

Day 179 ‘Cathleen’, home, 2020 It’s intense, listening to my Mother describe her childhood rape & how it affected her whole life, I’m awed by her strength in sharing.

Day 178 Interview tonight, listening to accounts of rape is so hard, when it’s your Mother, amplified. Stress migraine but I’m honoured to have been there to do it. Will it help? When scars run beyond deep?, I hope the sharing inspires conversation.

Day 176 Ma was really brave tonight, she persevered on through an epileptic absence to share more & tomorrow night we’ll continue audio recording & making photographs. *her eyes are failing so she uses a magnifying glass to read.

Day 179 Due to my Mothers high risk status, the mask is essential though in addition it’s (her idea) the perfect visual metaphor for the decades of silence, the gagging of so many that have lived through rape, sexual assault & the silence of society.

Day 178 The overwhelming response & messages of support to my working on the story of my Mother’s childhood rape & the affect on her life has mostly come from women, to which I’m deeply honoured but men, men, we have to listen & work to change things.

Day 177 I went 175 days without making a single photograph for stories, the time off really helped, especially for what I’m taking on currently. What’s brilliant is collaborative exchange, listening to ideas, many of which are fantastic.

Day 176 I don’t believe in ‘cancel culture’ but I do believe in, if the want takes you, to call someone a cunt if they are acting like one. I mean, they love having folk fawn & the baubles, you want one?accept the other! & hell, maybe listen & grow.

Day 175 AM walk done, Koda waits for her raw breakfast & goats 🐐 milk. I’ve chores with Ma, then I’ll try to shift some prints & maybe work on new story, I’m allowing much time for Ma to decompress between sessions.
