On 7th July 1917, 2nd Lt John Edward Rostron Young made his 4th & final operation, when a formation of Gotha Bombers attacked London. The German firepower overwhelmed Young in his Sopwith 1½ Strutter A8271, which plunged into the sea & sunk.

Supper is chicken marengo, which reminds me always of my late mother in law, Anne Stack, who cooked this dish to perfection. I’m cooking it in homage to her spirit, ahead of the anniversary of her birthday. She is rarely far from my thoughts, all these years on.

2nd Lt Edward Cecil Henry Robert Nicholls was posted to 37 Sqn at Stow Maries on 20/05/1918 but on 20 Sept, Edward was killed in a flying accident aged 20. His death certificate states a fractured skull resulting from falling out an aircraft.

2nd Lt. William Quintus Newsum Richardson On 6th October 1917 William took off from Goldhanger in a BE2e (6820). The casualty card states that the Engine “choked when leaving ground, stalled, nosedived and caught fire.”
