Absolutely! Recorded lessons are time-consuming but it's powerful for students to be able to pause and re-watch videos for more clarification on specific content. I know I do the same thing when I am trying to learn something from a recorded video!

Teresa, MS Literacy Teacher, NY. I took my remote homebase to the main hallway and had them guess where in the school I was. They were able to say hi to teachers walking by.

A1. I've been doing mental health check ins with my Ss, calling them to follow-up directly and genuinely reaching out. It isn't a new strategy but it has proven very effective this semester.

I had Ss make a short video telling me about them. I then made 4x6 cards where I wrote down their hobbies, etc. Then when face-to-face I made a point to go and chat about their β€œthings.” are the key.

Good virtual practices: Call parents to check in. Play happy music as ss log on. Play thinking music while ss are working. LAUGH. Celebrate ss by pointing acknowledging their effort. Casual conversation. Hang out after the call just for fun to get to know each other.

Yes! Haven’t turned on my camera for a faculty meeting this semester unless I was placed in a breakout room. Still engaged. Don’t understand this requirement for Ss to have cameras on when faculty are usually on their phones in teacher meetings!

A1: With many of my classes online, some of my professors have scheduled smaller groups from each class to meet at certain times so that we would be able to get to know our classmates better and have deeper conversations.

A1 Take the time to explicitly teach Ss the rules, routines, & procedures you want them to know, even remotely! Be ready to go over it again and again. It’s worth every second of your time.
