I know I'm late but I'm just finishing 's final season. I've been watching that show since it started and I needed to see it to the end b/c I REALLY wanted to see what would happen to Taystee. I gotta say... at the end, I felt the show was unnecessarily cruel.

is good art, because art is supposed to make us feel disturbed, uncomfortable. It should anger us, challenge us, convict us. But I also felt like it was cruel art. The kind that tells you the truth while rubbing salt in your gaping wound.

Although is compelling, I would not recommend it to anyone b/c if you are Black or Brown, it is traumatic. Maybe white people who don't know how fucked up the prison industrial complex is should watch it, but for us? It is an exercise in trauma p0rn.

There are times I was watching and I said out loud "this is devastating." Pennsatucky's ending? So TRAGIC. Made further cruel when we find out she actually passed the test she thought she failed. The show's writers felt like they were trolling us.

These writers were like "how much devastation can we bring unto these lives?" Had a woman who was stuck in ICE detention not have translator til her case date. Then they found out she was pregnant b/c on her way into US, she paid her way in by being raped by man at border

Nothing was good at the end of it all for the women who were not white. Taystee's spending the rest of her life in prison for a murder she didn't commit. Suzanne is in there til I'm not sure. Daya and Aleida are gonna kill each other. Cindy's homeless.

's thesis felt like: "The world is ugly. Look at it. It is cruel. Look at it again. Hope is futile." There were no real wins. There was ZEROOOO justice for anyone, especially Taystee (portrayed by the AMAZING ), who was the moral compass of the show.

BUT EVIL ASS HELLMAN BECAME WARDEN AFTER THEY FIRED TAMIKA. Which, was a final middle finger to anything that could be remotely close to good happening in that prison. Again: for every positive thing, they made sure to throw in 7 tragic things. WHYYYY.

felt like a documentary. It didn't sugar coat the world it showed. But I also didn't walk away from that show thinking "the problems of the world are insurmountable for Black and Brown people. Nothing is good." trolled in despair and brutality.
